We can all point to at least one or two (if not more) music artists who raised us. Molded our beliefs, what we care about, the way we see the world, our values and our morality. Maybe for you they were a classic rock band? An electronic band? A pop singer? Christian? Secular? Music changes us. It affects us in deep ways -- piercing our hearts like only music can. It digs into our soul and reflects it back to us. One of the music artists (and I’m sure you’ll learn of the other at some point in the coming weeks) that changed my life is Andrew Peterson. Some of you may have heard of him and are not at all surprised by that -- may have already known it. I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to music. :) His music comforted me, taught me, made me feel like I wasn’t alone. And, while there are so many of his songs that I could talk about, that I could point to for having a great effect on my life or for meaning so much to me, there is one in particular that is a massive foundation for the way that I process life. The song is called, “Windows in the World.” Now, much as I want to put the whole song here and talk in-depth about what it means, I don’t have time. Go look it up yourself -- Andrew Peterson has this way of weaving pictures that I hope you enjoy. For today, all I need is the chorus: “It's a window in the world, a little glimpse of all the goodness getting through. And all along the way the days are made of little moments of truth.” And it’s here where we find one of my staple world-views: God communicates with us through everything -- media, culture, creation, our traditions, music and entertainment, the way we deal with one another. If you are listening, God is communicating. That is how I see my life, how I see the world, how I see God. “All along the way the days are made of little moments of truth.” So I find God in movies, books, the sunrise, a child’s smile -- I crave those little moments of truth. I eagerly search for them like a man panning for gold. Some people understand it; some don’t. Some people judge me for not only listening to Christian music or reading/watching only Christian media; some appreciate the way that God created me to see the world. And it isn’t that Christian media or music is bad -- I want to make that clear. But, for me, it is sometimes so on the nose that it isn’t fun for me -- so much about the way I view things is diving deeper into the hidden meanings and connections to see where God is in things. It’s a ton more fun than just having someone tell me the truth straight up. (Though, as I said before, there is absolutely a place for that kind of truth as well. Just because it isn’t my favorite doesn’t mean that it isn’t good for my soul.) You may have noticed that a couple things around my website have changed.
Its title is different. If you go to my home page (which I suggest you do), you’ll see the awesome new stamp my husband made for me. I am rebranding -- at least for a while! I’m not sure how long I’ll do this series. We’ll just have to see where it takes us. But I’m so excited to get to do this, to get to bring you into my relationship with God in such an intimate way for me. It’s a little scary... But it’s so exciting. And I am so ready. I’d love to hear your feedback and comments in the weeks to come -- let’s start some conversations! Even if you disagree with me, I’d love to hear your opinions. Or if you see the world like this too, please don’t be afraid to talk about where you see God in the world around you. I’d like for this to just be a place for us to talk and share. Now, come on. Let’s go look out those windows.
